Talking to Myself

15 Aug

Body Pump was really hard this morning!

By that mean, I felt super weak this morning. Even now I feel strengthless. I got my time’s worth.

That is actually one of the ways I motivate myself during a hard workout. Since I usually workout in the wee hours of the morning I think, “You sure didn’t get up this early to put in minimal effort, so don’t waste your time. If your already here you may as well work hard.”

Self speak is ENORMOUSLY important. No one talks to you as much as your talk to yourself. People’s words impact us deeply. But our own words have more influence than everyone else put together.

You have the ability to effect the direction and outlook of your life by the words you say to yourself. Note that I did not say that you could control your life, cause you can’t, so why waste time trying.

By the words we say to ourself I mean our thoughts and our internal monologue. We all have one.

It’s the voice that speaks when we look in the mirror. Yep, that’s the one. That same one that seems to have barbed wire attached to it at times, saying things that no one would say to another person but we would say to ourselves.

God’s Word says in Proverbs 18:21 that there is power in our tongue, power over life and death.

I was talking with a man at church on Sunday who has lost a significant amount of weight and maintained for over a year. That is huge! Losing weight is easy, keeping it off is the real deal. He told me that he still sees himself as fat. I told him I see myself as fat too.

I was obese for many years, and overweight for most of my life. My picture of myself in my head was established long ago, dare I say somewhat etched in stone. But, through prayer, time, and effort I am chipping away at that edifice that is no longer an accurate representation of my physical condition.

Sometimes I look in the mirror and I see only the bad. I see the areas of my body that so seem to want to hold onto fat as much as I want to be rid of it. I see things I would change. But, there are moments when I get a glimpse of what I imagine is a more accurate view of myself.

In those moments I see things I like.

My prayer today is… Lord, help me see myself as you see me. Help me know what you want me to work on and what you want me to accept. Help me know what I can improve and what you are asking me to entrust in your care.

That is my prayer for you too today. Have a good one and say something nice to yourself… And someone else too! We all need to hear it!

What great words of wisdom. Self-talk is largely ignored by others but very loud in our own heads. I love seeing you change with new directions and how the gift of gab has a new format for you.
